So sad, I just read a news report yesterday that the Minke Whale eventually died in the harbor before it was able to return to the ocean. Scientists were preparing for a necropsy (animal autopsy) and it will be very interesting to see what the results show.

Even the open ocean can be dangerous to animal health. I get a National Geographic podcast every week and a few weeks ago there was one on killer whales. A researcher was waiting for a specific group of transient whales to arrive in the harbor in California for the winter. The normally on-time whales were about three weeks late. Tests eventually showed that high levels of toxins were in their blubber. The experienced researcher, whose name escapes me, was extremely shocked at how much had accumulated. It's speculated that this is a big factor in the whales late arrival. Again, biomagnification is harming the biggest and seemingly invincible creatures in the ocean. I just hope all of this data won't come too late for something to be done.

This is a very interesting article. I agree with Sarah when she said that she knows where the zookeepers are coming from because they don't have enough money to support the lifestyles of all of their anaimals, but killing their lions and then selling them to raise money for their awareness seems hypocritical to me. Since the Abyssinian lions are an endangered species, they should be protected. Maybe the zoo should work out a deal with other zoos to help them financially and maybe make a deal about which animals that they show. I do not know much about this issue, but I don't think that poisioning an endangered species is the anwer to the problem.

I agree with everyone's opinion: Whaling should be banned. Is there any REAL need for whales? I know that we use their blubber for things such as candles, soap, some forms of fuel, etc., but can we really not provide these things without whales? I think that there needs to be better enforcement of these whaling bans, because countries such as Japan seem to find ways around them. Whales are pretty, don't hurt them!

This article kind of upset me, because I LOVE animals. I can see where the zookeepers are coming from, because they obviously can't provide for these lions. But I think that killing them off shouldn't be an option. Maybe they could try to control the population within the zoo (separate males and females?). Maybe they could try to work with local environmentalists to work on a plan to introduce the lions that they can't keep into the wild. I don't know, I mean I'm no environmentalist. Hopefully they will come up with a method that will benefit both the lions and the zoo. I will definately follow up on this news story.

Whaling should be banned. I am not really sure about the whole research thing. Couldn't they study the whales why they were in their natural habitat. The killing of the whales is totally unnecessary.

I agree with you in that I think whaling should be banned. After all, certain species of whales are endangered as it is - they don't need to be extracted from the water for some research project. I think they should develop other ways of researching that doesn't involve killing the whales.

Haha I believe we did the same article! I'm glad to see that we are pretty much on the same page concerning the issue of poaching. It's not the easiest thing to eliminate because it is illegal, and is committed away from the eye of the government. Poaching is a serious issue in Africa where the large amounts of animals are not monitored as closely. It all boils down to people not being concerned about the well-being and treatment of animals.

I agree with both of you guys on that poaching is not good. I really think that people should try to find substitutes for certain things such as ivory. People need to stop being so greedy and think about the long-term effects of their actions.

Poaching is such a sad concept. I don't understand why someone would want ivory that bad. I mean sure it is pretty, but is it really worth it? I think that this issue should be focused on more by the government.
